UNDERSTANDING PRIMITIVE MENTAL STATES (UPMS)

UPMS is comprised of London Kleinein clinical workshops.

UPMS sponsors private study groups and large conferences in NYC that are open to the psychoanalytic community. These Conferences have included scholars from Europe and Latin America on topics related to emotional thinking and experience such as David Bell, Irma Brenman Pick, Catalina Bronstein, Sira Dermen, Nasir Ilahi, Robert Oelsner, Priscilla Roth, Gigliola Fornari Spoto, John Steiner, and Heinz Weiss.

UPMS members study the organization of the mind, emphasizing the primitive anxieties found in us all, and how to assist analysts working with persons suffering from these disturbing affective states. Transformation occurs in the shift from concrete thinking to symbolization, the capacity to bear separateness and loss, lessening of the punitive super-ego, and containment of primitive anxieties, which contribute to the internalization of healthier object relations and identifications.
