TRAUMA, GUILT, and REPARATION--HEINZ WEISS

This ongoing theoretical and clinical seminar aims to elucidate the three-dimensional world of object relations that helps us understand the infantile needs and fears that give rise to anxiety. Referencing the work of Klein and others, the seminar examines how feelings of persistent guilt work to foil attempts at reparation, locking trauma deep within the psyche. The concrete world of internal objects in borderline and psychotic patients accentuates anxiety and makes loving, hating, symbolization, and therefore true reparation impossible. Theoretical lectures will be rotated with clinical presentations.
